What Makes Disciplined Trading?
Disciplined trading is made up of every good practice associated with seeing real success in trading, it is the key factor behind every avenue of profitability. Think, showed good practice on the charts today? Disciplined Trading. Respected my plan? Disciplined Trading. The core concept being that discipline in trading is huge, but its split across a couple different categories of importance.
Category 1: Strategy Adherence
When speaking about the practice of strong trading discipline, we have to look straight to strategy adherence. In your pre set trading plan, you will be contingent on a set of confluences and entries. The most essential part of those are actually just respecting them. Yes, as simple as that sounds, the most important show of Disciplined trading is a trader respecting their preset rules.
Category 2: Good Practice
The next part of Disciplined trading is good practice. It sounds to simple right? It is. Good practice is displayed through your strategy adherence once again, but what do I mean when I say good practice? Well, good practice is knowing when a trade is forming via your edge, but more importantly, knowing when its not. That is the single most important part of disciplined trading, knowing when to not take a trade. Believe me, from our data within our platform, its far more common than you think.
Category 3: Risk Management
This last part is directly linked to disciplined trading. As I said previously, Adherence to your strategy and being able to implement good practice are essential, absolutely. Now think of yourself, adding to that impeccable risk management. As what is any trader without a serious skill for risk. In terms of disciplined trading though it means something entirely different. Its not about risking everything, its about being disciplined enough in your trading to be able to know when its time to NOT risk everything. That sounds crazy, I know. Your given the message all the time to risk as much as possible, for the cliche that "you never know when it'll go big"
WRONG. You do know, when its aligned with your proper strategy. This is the most essential piece to the importance of Disciplined trading, and if you can start working on this from the beginning, you'll be setting out to be an incredible trader one day.
But how do I build my Discipline in trading?
This is one of the most common questions we see, and from the sim trading we've seen, its clear people aren't actually getting the answer they need. Discipline is built through many avenues, as it is not solely DISCIPLINED TRADING. In order to be disciplined in one aspect of life, you must be disciplined in multiple. In terms of trading you can build on your disciplined traits in a sim environment, no real money risk.
In terms of yourself. Which may be arguably more important, you have to do the hard thing that I know you don't want to hear. You have to work on yourself, and you have to face yourself. Which is something most traders would run from, and its the reason that most will remain unprofitable.
Disciplined Trading is absolutely essential to any sort of trading practice, but people mistake it for purely a trading thing. Its always a two prong attack, as yes, maybe your strategy wasn't good on that entry, but ask yourself, were you really confident in your entry? or are you just trading to say you traded.
If your answer was either, you got work to do. Not because your wrong, because your not truly disciplined in trading yet. Don't worry, its one of the hardest things to be disciplined in. Your making out just fine.
