What is risk management?
If your asking this question right now, I don't think you've been trading so good. Risk management is protecting every part of your trading capital, whether that includes respecting your plan in the moment is the bigger question. This is the category that almost every good practice in trading is used to demonstrate. As managing your risk is applicable in every aspect of your trading.
The only difference really between yourself now and your profitable self is the level of maintenance your putting into ensuring that your efficiently able to stand at the line between protecting, and risking your capital. That is what risk management is. Arguably the most essential thing in trading outside of your psychology.
Why is it so important?
Think back to your first few days of demo trading, I'm sure you took series of losing trades? Well, that directly ties back to the importance of being able to keep your account in tact after such losses. ITS ESSENTIAL.
This is the separating factor between rookies and profitable traders. You think profitable traders don't lose? of course they do, just as much as anyone else does. The difference is in the risk management, since when they do take a loss, their account is able to handle it properly. Meaning they aren't constantly winning, they're just able to manage the losses.
Is it a trading skill?
Risk management is absolutely a skill. As it requires a lot of discipline to be able to execute properly. Trading is a game of temptations, constantly beckoning you with new ways to make some fast money. The trick is being able to resist, which absolutely takes skill to be able to accomplish, as you have to fight against your human nature. Which is not by any means an easy task.
This is THE skill that separates the beginners from the pros, it may be the hardest, but it is by far the most important skill in trading. The only way to build it properly is to practice in an environment that actually gives you real feedback, and allows you to track how your growing.
